The Weekly Library Spotlight

The New York Public Library's Youtube Channel

Well first thing's first, Happy Thanksgiving Eve!  It is times like this that we should take a little time out of our day and give thanks for everything we have been blessed with througtout this past year.  Thanksgiving is one of my favorite days of the year. Of course being a fat guy, I like the turkey, stuffing, and gravy.  But it is the time with family members that I really enjoy.

Well now that is out of the way, we can go back to the mission of TWLS, to highlight the best of library's social networking sites.  Today we are making a trip to the big city to visit the New York Public Library's YouTube Channel.  I have been trying to mix up different social networking sites, so we dont always go to MySpace, and I figured now is the time for a YouTube channel.

YouTube Channel's are pretty similar to a Facebook page, with comments from the author, comments, and a basic profile.  But of course, YouTube focuses on Videos.  And boy does the NYPL have videos.

Avaliable here, the NYPL's YouTube page has a myriad of videos.  Some are of poetry readings, some have interviews, and some profile different authors or books.  Having these videos is a good way to promote the resources of a library.  A user can listen to an author read his poetry, then if the user likes it they can go to the library and pick up the book.

It is a new way that library's can share their research with others, and a great way for users to attend lectures, without having to go on those busy New York streets.

So I hope between the turkey and pumpkin pie you can spare a moment to check out some videos on the NYPL's page.  Happy Thanksgiving to you all.
